The Maria Pita Square

A walk experience in the Maria Pita square or Plaza de Maria Pita in A Coruna is a must. The temperature was around 10°C and yet it was a pleasant exiting walk in this area that has a beautiful charm with its Architecture, shopping and food experience!

The Maria Pita square is probably A Coruna's main city plaza and takes its name from the town's heroine, Maria Pita. She was a heroine who played a pivotal role during the English invasion led by Sir Francis Drake in 1589. When her husband was killed during this battle, she took up his spear and rallied the town’s people against their invaders, leading them to victory.

The square is dominated by two major architectural wonders: The Town Hall building (Palacio Municipal) on one side and Maria Pita’s statue on another side. The Town Hall building, constructed between 1908-1917 under Pedro Mariño’s direction features an eclectic style with modernist influences. Its three domes are particularly striking against La Coruna’s skyline. In contrast to this imposing structure stands a bronze sculpture dedicated to Maria Pita herself – holding high her spear just like she did centuries ago!
