Our first visit at A Coruna was to the oldest known Roman lighthouse known as the Tower of Hercules. Built in the 1st century, the tower stands 55m tall looking into the north Atlantic coast of Spain.
The original tower had a ramp spiraling on the exterior and the outline is clearly visible in the facade.
As in many European historical places, this too has many myths as explained by our guide...
There is a small room at the base that preserves the cornerstone with the inscription that mentions the architect of the tower as Gaius Servius Lupus from Aeminium. Quite happy to see the architect's name preserved in a historical building!
